The drawings of J. Fiber, made with poured acrylic, colored pencil, graphite and ink are small worlds, rife with drama and conflict. The child of a fireman and an abstract painter, Fiber is no stranger to passion and risk-taking. Ruggedly masculine passages bump against petite strings of flowers; turgid forms push into bosomy mountains; and little boys with guns wear bows in their hair. Images of sex and violence are everywhere subverted by feminine decoration. J. Fiber describes the creative process as a curiously potent struggle between two sides of the self, where decision-making can be as fraught as an old married couple's argument over whose turn it is to do the dishes.

During her 6-week residency with the Central City Artist Project, Tawil is cultivating a series of collaborations with artists and organizations in the area. Her recent performance with musician Dave Easley at the opening night of the New Orleans Middle East Film Festival was the first in a series of "live performed research" projects. The concert at Zeitgeist on December 11th will feature 3 new works with local musicians, and is the culminating presentation of Tawil's residency. She has partnered up with pianist/composer Jeff Pagano for a new collaboration which will be performed live at Zeitgeist, as well as evolve into a video project with filmmaker Joseph Makkos. Tawil's duet with Joshua Wexler is rooted their mutual interest in free improvisation and experimental performance. The program will close with an ensemble work of Tawil, Pagano, Wexler, and harpist Luke Brechtelsbauer. The artists will weave together their various approaches, highlighting the diversity of their individual forms.

Exhibition: A Road Tattoo

with Steed Taylor

November 27 - November 28, 2010

Opens Sunday, November 28, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

New York City-based artist, Steed Taylor, will be in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans continuing his investigation into the intersection of memorials, ritual and public space by making one of his road tattoos. This site-specific, commemorative, community-based, public artwork will use a local road as the skin of the community to tattoo, in black high-gloss paint. Big and bold in size yet subtle in color, the tattoo-inspired design will appear and disappear with passing light as it meanders down the neighborhood street. During the 11/28 dedication all of New Orleans is invited to participate in the final step of the installation, when local children will be honored by writing their names in the artwork.

The 170ft. long tattoo runs the length of St. Andrew, between S. Robertson and Freret.

Artist Jessica Nissen's installation "Pattern Recognition Experience" merges physics, sound and visual form to offer an outlet for pure expressive energy. In conjunction with the Equal Voice Institute, the installation will be presented as "Voices of Central City" and will, at the very least, provide momentary creative release or "recognition" while giving literal shape to the redeveloping community's voices.
