Voices of Central City
November 7, 2010
Jessica Nissen’s interactive installation, “Pattern Recognition Experience” merges with the Equal Voice Institute to present: Voices of Central City. For this project, Nissen connects a digital oscilloscope, projector, printer, microphone, and electric guitar to create a dynamic link between physics, sound and visual form. Every member of the community will be invited to participate by speaking into the microphone, clapping their hands, or playing a chord on the guitar. As they do so the sound is translated into pattern by the oscilloscope. Nissen simultaneously captures and prints a “drawing” of the pattern and we all witness the projection of the fluctuating ‘drawing’ created by the interaction. The “Voices” project does not demand any previous knowledge of music, physics or drawing yet introduces all three in an interdisciplinary and empiric manner. The project will present, at the very least, a momentary creative outlet or “recognition” and give literal shape to the redeveloping community’s voices.
The organization is thrilled to be working in collaboration with the Equal Voice Institute on our first project, Voices of Central City. Together, for one night, every family whose voice has gone unheard will be celebrated.
